I thought I'd see if the technique I'm using to calculate GI could be used to create subsurface scattering type effects as well. I haven't really read up on SSS techniques so this is just an approximation of the actual effect but I have to say I'm quite pleased with the results. It turned out to be fairly straightforward to implement and it's really fast. The 1024x1024 light maps in these scenes were generated in about 40 seconds.
